In Suspense and Incomplete

Transitions and the in-between times of life are a challenge. There are so many situations that cause this uncomfortable interlude. It can be changing jobs or houses, recovering from an illness, managing a personal financial crisis, graduating college or living in a new city. We would prefer that this process hurry itself along. We would like to feel like our old selves again.

I turn to the Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin for guidance and stability. He writes that all “progress is made by passing through some stages of instability….and only God can say what this new spirit is gradually forming within you will be…we must accept the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense and incomplete.” While this makes perfect sense the discomfort of the unknown is real. I often say that I’d love for someone to whisper in my ear that in a few months’ time, “All shall be well.” (Julian of Norwich)
